Set in Shanghai in 1949, just before the city’s liberation, the story revolves around a secret assassination plan. The Nationalist government’s intelligence bureau, under Chiang Kai-shek’s orders, compiles a “black list” of prominent figures from various social sectors who support democratic reforms. These individuals are targeted for elimination in order to suppress opposition.
To carry out the mission, agent Huang Longjie forms a covert team called Lightning, disguised as representatives of a pharmaceutical company. Their task is to infiltrate Shanghai and execute the assassinations.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist underground establishes the Dawn action group, led by businesswoman and secret party member Guo Jiayue, with intelligence officer Wang Huaizhi as liaison. Their mission is to protect those on the list and foil the assassinations.
The two sides clash in a deadly game of cat and mouse across Shanghai. The Dawn group quickly proves its strength by eliminating several of Huang’s operatives, escalating the conflict. As the struggle intensifies, the city becomes a battlefield of intrigue, betrayal, and survival.
